Internal Medicine focuses on the medical needs of adults, age 18 or
older. Physicians who specialize in internal medicine are called
internists.
Internists are specially trained to
diagnose and treat adult patients with acute illnesses, chronic
problems, and complex medical disorders in both the office and hospital
settings. If surgery is indicated, your internist will arrange for a
consultation with a physician in the appropriate surgical specialty.
